“FARAWAY MEMORIES FROM FARAWAY PLACES” EXHIBIT OPENS FROM MAY 2 TO THE END OF AUGUST 2022
Our friends at the Old Saybrook Town Hall generously host for the next four months an individual exhibition that includes 9 oil paintings of recent execution.
I have been working for the last year on the series, which talks about native people and their surroundings. Some of them out of our time line, but always sharing their traditions. Since the show is self-curated, I was able to display a painting that hardly could have been accepted in other settings because it is a master copy.
Master copies are not just copies of other artworks, they go beyond and serve the living artist to understand in a better way the techniques and processes of the original creator, seeing the word through their eyes without losing our own vision.
They are not considered original artwork and they have no chance of being included in art shows. Master copies can be seen though social media now, from all over the world, artists share their interpretation of the Masters. But the way to see one in the flesh is visiting the artist studio and see these works that could be treated just as “exercises”.
My interpretation of “Pilgrims going to Mecca” was taken from the original painted in 1861 by the French artist Leon Belly, now in view at the Musee d’Orsay. Roughly twice the size of my copy, and painted from living models and photo reference, it depicts a caravan on their way to Mecca. Sadly, Leon Belly is a forgotten Master. I hope by looking at my master copy, people get curious and google his name. Lets remember him.

“MEMORIAS LEJANAS DE LUGARES LEJANOS” EXPOSICION INDIVIDUAL ABIERTA DESDE EL 2 DE MAYO HASTA FINALES DE AGOSTO
Nuestros amigos de la Presidencia Municipal de Old Saybrook albergarán los siguientes cuatro meses una exposición individual que incluye 9 pinturas al óleo de ejecución reciente. He trabajado el último año en la serie, que habla de gente nativa y sus alrededores. Algunos de ellos se encuentran fuera de nuestro tiempo, pero siempre compartiendo sus tradiciones.
He tenido la oportunidad de elegir los cuadros para mi exposición y estoy mostrando uno que difícilmente podría haber sido aceptado en otras condiciones porque es una copia original o copia maestra.
Una copia original no sólo es la copia de otra obra de arte, van más allá y sirven a los artistas que los recrean a entender de mejor manera las técnicas y los procesos de los autores originales, viendo el mundo a través de sus ojos, pero sin perder los nuestros.
No se consideran arte original y no tienen posibilidad de ser incluidos en exhibiciones curadas. Las copias maestras son compartidas a través de redes sociales de manera internacional en nuestros días. La única manera de ver una copia en vivo es visitar el estudio de un artista y esperar que este nos enseñe sus “ejercicios”.
Mi interpretación de “Peregrinos yendo a la Meca” fue tomada del original pintado en 1861 por el francés León Belly y se encuentra en el Musee d’Orsay. El cuadro es dos veces más grande que mi copia, fue basado en modelos vivos y fotografía de la época. Describe una caravana que viaja por el desierto hacia La Meca. Desgraciadamente León Belly es un Maestro olvidado, espero que cuando la gente vea mi copia y les dé curiosidad saber más, “gogleen” su nombre. Vamos a recordarlo.
